FIS Declares 3rd World Snow Day to be a Success

The International Ski Federation (FIS) have just released a report declaring the third edition of World Snow Day, which took place on 19th January 2014, to have been a resounding success.

The initiative, launched by the FIS in 2012, is designed to promote winter sports to children, primarily for the health benefits it brings, but also because of how much fun skiing and snowboarding can be!

The FIS had set themselves the target of reaching 500,000 participants by 2014, the event’s third year. In the end, they managed to surpass this, with 549,000 people taking part across 610 events in 35 countries. Many events offered free skiing and snowboarding/lift passes for children and their families, including those at Lake Louise, Canada; and Wengen, Switzerland.

This year’s event also focused on environmental issues, with an emphasis on conservation, as well as snow safety. The FIS were particularly pleased with the number of organisers that included activities suitable for children on these topics. One fantastic example of this took place in Canada, where treasure hunts were organised with children using avalanche equipment to find their prizes!

Next year’s event is set to take place in ski resorts across the globe on 18th January 2015 and is expected to be even bigger and better, with even more children being given the chance to experience the exciting world of snowsports.
