Piazza del Colosseo, 1
Echoing the giant stadiums of today, the Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre ever built by the Romans. Built by the Emperor Vespasian at the end of the first century AD, it could accommodate as many as 87,000 spectators, who gathered for a particularly bloody form of Roman entertainment, as gladiators fought wild animals and each other, to the death.
