Your politics school trip will help your students to better understand the social and cultural contexts of the political history they’re studying.

For example, on a school trip to Atlanta, your students will learn more about the realities of segregation. They’ll explore what life was like for black people in Georgia and Alabama in the 19th and 20th centuries and they’ll discover the personal stories of some of they key figures in the civil rights movement.

On a politics school trip to Belfast, your students will learn what life was like in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. They’ll be able to learn more about what how the status of Northern Ireland became an issue that strongly divided its people. And they’ll discover what made unionists and loyalists want to remain a part of the United Kingdom and Irish nationalists and republicans want to join the rest of Ireland. Plus, of course, they’ll learn more about the Peace Process.

And in Berlin, your students can explore Germany’s complicated political history. They can explore the factors that led to revolution and the dissolution of the monarchy, the establishment of the Weimar Republic and its subsequent collapse, and the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party. They’ll also learn more about how the foundations of the European Union partly lay in the desire for European unity in the wake of two devastating world wars that started in Europe.

Show them the importance of politics

As well as discovering the context in which political history took place, your politics school trip will also offer your students the opportunity to discover how the events you’ve been studying has influenced the politics, culture and society of the country you’re visiting today.

For example, on your politics school trip to Atlanta, as well as exploring the history of the civil rights movement, you’ll also be able to explore today’s Black Lives Matter movement and the issues confronting black people in the USA today.

And in Belfast, your students will find out what has happened since the Good Friday Agreement and how Brexit has brought the status of Northern Ireland back into focus.

Your politics school trip could also focus on how politics and governments function in reality, helping your students to better understand the role played by various bodies.

For example, in Washington D.C., your students will learn more about how government functions in the US. They’ll learn about the nature of democracy in America, and learn more about the role of the President, the Constitution and the Supreme Court.

And in Belfast, your students will love the opportunity to learn more about the power of devolved bodies in the UK. You can visit Stormont and take part in a Q & A session with an MLA, enjoy a talk by Assembly staff or even take part in a role play of an election.
