Discover the flavours of Greece on a school trip to Athens.
The Greek culinary tradition is over 4,000 years old (in fact, the first cookery book came out of Ancient Greece). The origins of many dishes can be traced back to Ancient Greece and later, the Byzantine Empire. So, as you discover the country's culinary traditions, you'll also be exploring its wider history.
Athens is the perfect place to discover Greek cuisine, which is famous for its fresh ingredients like olive oil, herbs, seafood and cheeses. You'll discover how, like in many other Mediterranean countries, Greek cuisine is based on olive oil, wheat and wine, but uses other flavours more than its neighbours (like oregano, mint and dill, for example).
Students will take part in hands-on cooking workshops, explore local markets such as Varvakios Agora, tour olive oil and cheese producers, and see how Greek food is prepared, from farm to plate. They'll return home full of new ideas and a greater understanding of where food comes from, as well as the importance of food as a central part of culture.
