Want your students to understand the scale of World War I and why we refer to it as a world war?
We’ve designed this poster to show your students exactly that!
Your students will see that countries from every continent were involved in the conflict to some degree. They will also see how countries were allied with each other in two distinct groups – the Central Powers and the Allies.
The Central Powers included Austria-Hungary, the German Empire (which included German East Africa, German South West Africa, Kamerun and Togoland), the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria, the South African Republic (in what is now the northeastern part of the modern-day Republic of South Africa), the Sultanate of Darfur (part of present-day Sudan) and Jabal Shammar (in the northern part of the Arabian Peninsula, including parts of modern-day Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait and Jordan).
The Allies included the British Empire (which included Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Newfoundland, South Africa, Rhodesia, the Sultanate of Egypt, Sudan, Cyprus, Kuwait and India), France, Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, Japan, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, Romania, the United States, Panama, Cuba, Greece, Siam (now Thailand), Liberia, China, Brazil, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Haiti, Honduras, Hejaz (now central-eastern Saudi Arabia), Nejd and Hasa (now central-eastern Saudi Arabia) and Asir (now southwestern Saudi Arabia).
We hope your students find this poster useful!
