Environmental Science Trip to North Devon

Halsbury Sticker

Imagine your students had the opportunity to explore a variety of different environments, all on one trip?

Imagine no more.

Nestled within the Braunton Burrows Biosphere Reserve, Skern Lodge offers your group the chance to do just that.

Your group will be able to examine species richness and find out more about marine and dune system conservation efforts in the area. You’ll be able to investigate ecological succession (including psammosere succession), the use of indicator species and the habitat management strategies being used in the local area (especially within the biosphere reserve itself).

You’ll also have the chance to look at how humans interact with the environment here and how development, farming and tourism are managed.

You’ll be able to carry out fieldwork (you can even choose to have Skern’s expert instructors lead this if you prefer - a supplement will apply), and you’ll even have the opportunity to visit nearby Hinkley Point to find out about renewable energy projects in the area.

After a day of exploring, you’ll return to Skern Lodge, where comfortable accommodation ideally set up for school groups awaits. And, if your group is still full of energy, you could choose to add some adventurous activities, like orienteering, climbing and kayaking to help with resilience and teambuilding.

Curriculum

A Level
  • Study Braunton Burrows and other protected habitats to examine species richness, habitat diversity and conservation of biodiversity (e.g. marine and dune ecosystems).
  • Investigate ecological succession (including psammosere succession), the use of indicator species, and habitat management strategies in dynamic systems.
  • Evaluate local conservation approaches, such as biosphere reserve zoning (core, buffer, transition zones) and the management of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs).
  • Assess human impact from tourism and agriculture, including land-use conflicts (e.g. dog-walking, military training and recreational access vs conservation goals).
  • Consider the environmental, social and economic implications of decisions around development, farming, tourism and conservation in protected landscapes.
  • Observe atmospheric, hydrospheric and lithospheric processes in coastal and river systems (e.g. erosion, deposition, sediment transport, water quality).
  • Identify and evaluate local renewable energy projects (e.g. solar, wind) in terms of sustainability, efficiency and public acceptance in rural environments.
  • Carry out fieldwork using quadrats, transects, kick sampling and biotic indices, with opportunities for data collection, presentation and analysis.
GCSE
  • Study dune, estuarine and woodland ecosystems, exploring ecosystem interactions, energy flow, biodiversity, adaptations and the role of indicator species.
  • Observe plant succession in dynamic environments, such as the psammosere at Braunton Burrows.
  • Investigate coastal processes (e.g. erosion, longshore drift) and identify associated landforms such as cliffs, stacks, beaches and splits.
  • Evaluate coastal management strategies, including the use of sea defences at locations like Westward Ho!
  • Assess sustainability strategies and land-use conflicts by examining conservation techniques, pressures from tourism and development, and sustainable land use planning within biosphere reserve zones. Carry out fieldwork using quadrats, transects, kick sampling and biotic indices, with opportunities for data collection, presentation and analysis.

Accommodation

Skern Lodge

Skern Lodge is so much more than a residential centre. The whole ethos here is built around experiential learning and adventure.

A great base for geography and environmental science trips around the North Devon coast, the centre also offers an incredible variety of activities, from high ropes and climbing to kayaking and surfing.

But unlike other centres, the team always brings the focus back to the educational impact all this fun is having on the students. And, because it’s been purpose-built to host school and youth groups, the centre is ideally set up to ensure both you and your students have a safe, enjoyable stay.

Location: Skern Lodge is ideally located on a tranquil 22-acre site within the UNESCO Biosphere of Braunton Burrows. Just a short stroll away is the quaint village of Appledore.

Features: The centre boasts incredible activity facilities, from a high ropes course to a heated outdoor swimming pool. There’s also a dining room that seats 110, where fresh, locally-sourced food is served to ensure your group are properly fuelled, as well as a disco room where you can celebrate the end of a successful trip.

There’s free WiFi throughout the centre, as well as several meeting rooms, classrooms and social areas (in fact, each accommodation block benefits from a communal area that can be used for activities, as a classroom, or even simply as a useful meeting point before heading out on your next adventure).

Bedrooms: The four separate accommodation areas all boast drying rooms and central heating throughout. Students will stay in multi-bedded rooms with shared bathrooms, while accompanying staff will be accommodated in en-suite rooms close to their group, making supervision easier.

Ground-floor bedrooms with wet rooms are available on request. And (unlike many residential centres) your beds will be made up for you before you arrive, so you can get stuck straight into the activities.

Ultimate Adventure Centre

The Ultimate Adventure Centre is a purpose-built activity centre nestled within the picturesque North Devon countryside, close to Bideford.

Combining purpose-built youth accommodation with an incredible variety of on-site activities (including high ropes, mountain boarding, assault course and archery), this is the perfect setting in which to make lifelong memories with your group.

Location: Set in the scenic North Devon countryside just 1.5 miles from Bideford town and surrounded by outdoor attractions like The Big Sheep theme park, Westward Ho! beach, and the Tarka Trail, the centre combines a safe, friendly stay with easy access to the natural adventure—making it a wonderful, practical base for an unforgettable school residential.

Features: Facilities include modern toilet and shower blocks, a washing‑up area, an onsite café and camp shop, Wi‑Fi zones, 24‑hour reception (perfect for late arrivals), and spacious social areas—great for gatherings and relaxation.

Bedrooms: The centre offers a mix of private and hostel-style rooms with beds pre‑made (linen included) for a hassle‑free arrival. Your group will stay in blocks, with students sleeping in dormitory-style rooms with shared bathrooms, and accompanying staff in twins with en-suite bathroom facilities (within the same block as your group to ease supervision and safeguarding).
