French Revolution school trips to Paris

Of course, the birthplace of the French Revolution, Paris is an ideal place to discover the origins of the modern nation state.

Our history school trips to Paris can bring to life this pivotal point in European history and help to illustrate their legacy in modern-day French and European culture.

There’s a great choice of visits in and around the city that will help to enrich your students’ understanding of this period of French history.

You’ll definitely want to visit Versailles, the biggest and most elaborate royal palace in Europe. Here, your students will begin to understand the incredible luxury that the French monarchy and aristocracy enjoyed. They’ll see how different the daily life of the king and his court was so detached from the reality of most of his subjects and they’ll gain a deeper understanding of where some of the tensions between the monarchy and the people began.

Inside Versailles is the Musée de l’Histoire de France, which has several galleries devoted to the French Revolution and the aftermath. The history of the museum itself is worth exploring too – it was opened in 1837 by King Louis Philippe I as an attempt to reconcile the competing narratives of the French monarchy and French Revolution.

At the characterful Conciergerie on the banks of the Seine in central Paris, your students will learn more about the 2,780 prisoners who were held and tried here during the French Revolution, including its most famous prisoner, Marie-Antoinette.

The Musée Carnavalet tells the story of the city of Paris including, of course, the French Revolution. There’s a great collection of art and historical artefacts from the period, including a stone from the Bastille that has been carved into a model of the prison. There’s also a section on Napoleon and Napoleon III.

As well as learning more about the French Revolution itself, your students will have plenty of opportunity to consider the legacy of the revolution and subsequent events on modern France and its culture, which is something that is very difficult to get across to them in lessons.

Why arrange a French Revolution school trip?

Immerse them in history

Nothing brings history to life more effectively than visiting the locations in which events took place. On your French Revolution-themed history school trip to Paris, your students will visit the sites of key events during the revolution, from the opulent Palace of Versailles, to the Place de la Bastille, where the storming of the Bastille took place.

They’ll visit the Conciergerie, where many prisoners, including Marie-Antoinette were held and tried, as well as the Place de la Concorde, where many key figures, including Marie-Antoinette, her husband Louis XVI and Robespierre, were all executed by guillotine.

By visiting these key sites and having been immersed in the history, they’ll have first-hand memories that they can draw upon in exams.

Inspire them

A history school trip to Paris will not only help your students to gain a deeper understanding of the French Revolution and its immediate aftermath, it will show them the lasting impact that these events have had on France and French culture.

Experiencing this will help them to see how valuable the study of history is – knowing what has gone before can give us a much more detailed understanding of the world as it is now. And appreciating this fact will encourage your students to develop a passion for history and how it can help them to develop ideas about the world.

Your history school trip could be what encourages them to take their history studies further!
