Why visit Reykjavik?

See geography in action

The world’s northernmost capital city, Reykjavik is the perfect base for a geography school trip to explore the country’s wild, volcanic landscape.

Iceland is a geographer’s dream, as there is so much to explore here, all within a short area. Within easy reach of Reykjavik are imposing volcanoes, spectacular waterfalls and dramatic glaciers.

You can walk along black sand beaches, and even walk between two continental plates, all before returning to the Icelandic capital for some good food and a good night’s rest!

For any geographer, an educational visit to Reykjavik to explore the spectacular landscape of Iceland is an unforgettable experience!

Experience incredible science

If you’re looking for a school trip to inspire your young scientists, you’d be hard pushed to find a better option than Reykjavik.

You’ll explore how Iceland has harnessed its natural geothermal power to create sustainable energy at the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Station and Hveragerdi Greenhouse Village.

At the Lava Centre, you’ll find out how volcanic activity created Iceland and you’ll see how Iceland monitors its volcanoes and earthquake zones.

Discover the dynamic capital of Iceland

And it may be small, but it has plenty of character, with its unique architecture and welcoming atmosphere.

It’s also one of the cleanest, greenest and safest cities on the planet which, of course, makes it ideal for a school trip.

And you won’t go hungry on your school trip to Reykjavik, this tiny city’s dynamic dining scene means there’s loads of fantastic restaurants to try.

FAQs

How long should we spend in Reykjavik on a school trip?
In order to make the most of everything that Reykjavik and Iceland has to offer, we would recommend planning to stay for at least 4 days.
What's the best time of year to visit Reykjavik on a school trip?
Reykjavik is a fantastic destination all year round. Winter offers the best chance to see the Northern Lights (although this is never guaranteed) and summer offers endless daylight.
What's the best way to get around Reykjavik?
Reykjavik itself is a compact city and it's generally it's easiest to get around on foot when in the city itself. However, most groups will want to explore the landscape and, in order to do this, you need to use a coach. We will, of course, provide you with a comfortable coach that you can use throughout your tour.
Which visits are a must on a school trip to Reykjavik?
We would definitely recommend that you make sure you include a visit to Thingvellir National Park on your itinerary - your students will be able to walk between two continental plates here. We would also recommend including a visit to one of the hot springs or geothermal pools that are so popular in Iceland - the Secret Lagoon is a real favourite among our school groups. The impressive waterfall, Gullfoss, is also a must-see, as are Great Geysir and Strokkur geysers.
Are there any free things to do in Reykjavik?
Of course, the best free thing you can do in Iceland is simply enjoy the incredible nature and spectacular landscapes. We would also recommend taking some time to explore Reykjavik itself - don't miss the great photo ops at the Sun Voyager monument which sits looking out over the atmospheric bay, and the iconic Hallgrimskirkja church. Entry to the church is free if you'd like to take a look around, although there is a fee payable if you want to climb up the tower.
Can I arrange a cross-curricular school trip to Reykjavik?
Yes, Reykjavik is a fantastic destination for both geography and science!
