But did you know that you can also choose to include a stopover in Rome or Sorrento, giving your ski trip further educational value and making it completely unforgettable?
Rome
The capital of Italy and once the centre of the Roman Empire, Rome is well worth a visit for any student, as it offers them the opportunity not only to immerse themselves in Italian culture but also to learn more about the history of Europe as a whole.
What should we see?
However long you’re planning to stop in Rome, you must take the time to see some of the city’s Ancient Roman monuments, whether that’s the iconic Colosseum, the impressive Pantheon, or the Roman Forum.
The Vatican City is also worth a visit. For one thing, it’s the only example of a country within a city in the world. And if you’re a Catholic school, you mustn’t miss the opportunity to attend Mass at St. Peter’s.
What should we eat?
Bucatini all’Amatriciana and spaghetti alla carbonara are two of the most famous dishes from Rome. Like the rest of Italy, you’ll find that there will be plenty of familiar, child-friendly options available, so even the fussiest eater will find something to enjoy!
Sorrento
Sorrento is a beautiful seaside resort on the Gulf of Naples, just north of the Amalfi Coast. The centre has a large pedestrianised shopping area, with lots of lovely little shops, restaurants and cafes.
What should we see?
The views across to Mt. Vesuvius from Sorrento are spectacular and, if you have time, you could choose to take a day trip out to the island of Capri, or to one of the towns along the Amalfi Coast, such as Positano or Amalfi itself. Or you could take the opportunity to explore Pompeii or Herculaneum.
And make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to visit one of the many enchanting lemon groves around the town.
What should we eat?
In Sorrento, seafood is king and some of the best restaurants in town are down in the picturesque Marina Grande, once a traditional fishing village.
