What are the benefits of sport?

Physical Benefits of Sport

The physical benefits of sport are, perhaps the most obvious, but they are also incredibly compelling.

It’s been shown that sport and exercise can contribute to increasing life expectancy.

That’s because regular participation in sport and exercise helps you to maintain a healthy weight and protects brain, heart and bone health. And all this is important in preventing many long-term illnesses, from Alzheimer's to strokes, cancer and Type 2 diabetes.

Taking part in sports can also have short term benefits too, such as boosting your energy and improving the quality of your sleep.

Regular participation in sport also helps improve balance and coordination, which in turn reduces the risk of falls.

Mental Benefits of Sport

We talk a lot about the physical benefits of sport, but the mental benefits are equally as important, especially now.

Taking part in sport can improve your mood, reduce stress and anxiety and even prevent depression. In this way, sport can be incredibly healing for those who are struggling with their mental health and wellbeing.

Taking part in sport can also improve the way we see ourselves, improving our confidence and self-esteem.

Sport can even help with academic performance. Studies have shown that regular participation in sport can improve memory and concentration, and can even help students to achieve greater success in exams.

Social Benefits of Sport

As well as the physical and mental benefits, sport also offers some incredible social benefits too.

Taking part in group sports can improve relationships between players and helps individuals to improve their teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills.

Organised sport also helps to improve discipline and can boost self-motivation too, by making us feel like we are part of a collective and that we are contributing towards that.
