Sigiriya Rock Fortress
The Sigiriya Rock Fortress is an iconic site in Sri Lanka
and so a regular feature on any kind of school trip to the country.
At almost 200m high, there is quite a climb to the top, so you can skip the morning training session on the day you visit and still know that your team are getting the exercise they need to stay strong.
The view from the top is incredible – you’ll certainly see why it was worth the effort to build a fortress in this location. And you’ll see the palace ruins, gardens and canals – this is one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning in the world!
Minneriya National Park
If you’re visiting Sri Lanka
between May and October, then you shouldn’t miss a visit to the Minneriya National Park for what will surely be a highlight of your tour.
That’s because, at this time of year, the waters of the reservoir in the park begins to recede, exposing the lush grass on the banks. And this attracts elephants.
Small herds from surrounding parks make their way to Minneriya, joining others to form massive herds. You could see literally hundreds of elephants!
Temple of the Tooth
Buddhism is the majority religion in Sri Lanka
and so an important element of the local culture. Therefore, it’s quite nice to include a visit to a Buddhist site in your itinerary, to give your students the opportunity to learn more about Buddhism.
And Kandy’s famous Temple of the Tooth is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites you can visit, as it houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha.
Foundation of Goodness
If you’re interested in getting your students involved in some outreach work, then we can highly recommend the Foundation of Goodness.
Set up after the devastating 2004 tsunami, the Foundation of Goodness aims to empower less privileged rural communities in order to provide them with equal opportunities.
In October 2018, Invicta Grammar School included some outreach work at the Foundation of Goodness in their school sports tour to Sri Lanka, and delivered a variety of English and sports sessions to around 50 school children each day.
Rafting Kitulagala
Adventure sports ae always a fantastic inclusion to school sports tours. Why not try white water rafting in the picturesque Kelani river valley, where you’ll experience 5 major rapids and 4 minor rapids.
Dambulla
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the beautiful temple complex sits about 160m above the road in the southern part of Dambulla.
This is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complexes in Sri Lanka . The caves are home to some fantastic sculptures and paintings depicting the life of the Buddha, as well as some Sri Lankan kings.
This is a brilliant visit for helping to give your students a better idea of the history and culture of Sri Lanka .
Galle City
The historic city of Galle is another UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a real delight to explore on foot.
Galle is the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European colonial powers, so it’s a great visit for educating students about Sri Lanka ’s colonial past.
