School trips to Turkey are growing in popularity and the capital, Istanbul, which bridges Europe and Asia, offers great educational value for classical studies and leisure and tourism groups. Originally a Greek city named Byzantium, Istanbul was then made eastern capital of the Roman Empire by Constantine the Great, who eventually gave the city its second name, Constantinople. The city then became the capital of the Byzantine Empire, until it fell to the Ottoman Turks in the 15th century. This fascinating history means that there is a huge amount for school groups to discover in this beautiful country on the edge of two continents.
