School Ski Trip to Dachstein West

top

Fabulous scenery

Exciting and varied skiing

Snow-sure ski area

Resort Information

On your school ski trip to Dachstein West, your lift pass will provide access to Gosau, Annaberg and Russbach. You’ll be blown away by the sheer beauty of Gosau, a charming, rustic village in the shadow of the vast, rugged Gosaukamm mountain range. You’ll really feel like you’re in ‘traditional’ Austria, where cosy ski huts invite passers-by in to warm themselves up and experience real Austrian hospitality and gemütlichkeit. The Austrians refer to the area as a Schneeloch, or snow hole, and Dachstein West is prone to heavy snowfalls. Added to this, the excellent snowmaking facilities ensure that this is a snow-sure resort – so your young skiers won’t be held back by a lack of snow.

Skiing Information

Dachstein West is a brilliant choice of ski resort if you have a mixed-ability group – it’s ideal for beginners and intermediates, and there are also a handful of black runs for the more advanced skiers. Beginners will gain confidence on the long, tree-lined blue runs in Gosau, or on the Astauwinkl in Annaberg. Intermediates will appreciate the wide variety of red runs on the Zwiesalalm, which also offers good links to Annaberg and Russbach. If you have any keen snowboarders in your group, they’ll be excited to learn that the snow park on Edtalmbahn in Russbach has been redesigned by free-ride experts to include more ‘obstacles’ and, therefore, to be more fun!

Dachstein West is an excellent ski resort, particularly for the intermediate skiers. Snow conditions have been excellent for our previous 3 visits and I'm told that there is a good snow record in the region by many locals. The BSFZ in Obertraun is amazing accommodation by school standards. I'd be happy staying there on a family holiday! Rooms are generously sized and the food is ample with plenty of choice. The ski equipment supplied in the centre is amongst the best I've seen in 14 years of organising ski trips and the instructors are very good, all speaking good English. There is a brief journey each day but if kids are allowed to wear ski boots on the bus it is just 15 minutes extra kip! Pupils do not have to carry skis more than 20 metres because they are kept on the bus each night and we were dropped off at the first chair lift. We had plenty of games and sport around the centre and used the sports cafe for late night supper. The only reason I would not recommend this destination is because I would like to keep it as a secret so that the pistes are quiet and the queues are short. You'd be pushed to find a better resort and accommodation combination. Halsbury Travel have been excellent as always!

National Sports & Recreation Centre BSFZ

The BSFZ National Sports & Recreation Centre complex is one of Austria’s top training facilities for football athletes, having had Chelsea youth and the Scottish national team to stay there, among others. In the winter this self-contained complex is the perfect retreat for Halsbury groups.

Students are accommodated in one of three buildings, which merge effortlessly into the mountain scenery. All rooms are spacious, sleeping 4 students in single beds, with en-suite facilities and plenty of storage space. Each group also has its own meeting room. Through an arrangement the accommodation has with the restaurants on the mountain, each member of the group receives a voucher they can use to purchase a meal on the slopes instead of a packed lunch - which makes a great difference on cold days!
