British Science Week

Posted in: Science

British Science Week starts on Friday! The UK’s biggest celebration of all things STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), British Science Week offers the ideal opportunity to inspire your pupils.

Over 10 days from 9th – 18th March there will be a number of events taking place across the country to encourage people to get involved in and inspired by the world of STEM.

This year, British Science Week will place particular focus on the health of our oceans. We all saw Blue Planet II and many of us were shocked at the sheer amount of plastic affecting our marine life. British Science Week will help to build on the public awareness of this issue with a couple of innovative initiatives.

The first is very exciting – a virtual 10k race. Named ‘Run to the Deep’, the immersive running app will take you on a journey from the surface to the Marianas Trenches, which is the deepest known part of the ocean.

The second is a citizen science project, which is always a great way to get pupils interested in science. In partnership with charity The Plastic Tide, the organisers of British Science Week are asking the public to help them tag 250,000 images of marine litter, to help create a machine learning algorithm that will eventually be able to detect and identify marine litter in images received from an army of drones surveying our coastlines.

So just spending a few minutes clicking on images during British Science Week could really make a difference in the fight against marine litter!

If you’re celebrating British Science Week, make sure you tweet some pictures of your event, and use the hashtag #BSW18. We can’t wait to see everyone getting inspired by the world of STEM!

And don’t forget, a school trip can be another great way to inspire students to love STEM. We offer a fantastic range of science and maths school trips, contact us today to find out more or to request a tailor-made quote.
