Water scarcity is an increasing problem around the world. We've created this handy infographic to help you to explain to your pupils what this means and why this is happening.
It's so important that younger generations understand the problem of water scarcity and its causes. They need to understand that it is mainly down to human actions that we are seeing more cities in 'water stress', with over 1 billion people struggling to access water.
Climate change and population growth are, of course, adding to the problem of water scarcity and are issues that will need to be addressed by national governments and international committees working together. These two factors alone would be enough to create pressure on the global water supply. But in addition to that, we're polluting our water, making even less of it suitable for human consumption. We're also increasing agriculture which requires greater irrigation, especially in drier areas, causing stress on an area's water supply. And groundwater is also often pumped at a faster rate than nature is able to replenish.
We're also using far too much water as individuals. And that's where your students can start to make a difference. Check out our 'Easy Ways to Save Water' poster to see how.
