The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2018 was the ‘Power of Words’ and was designed to encourage people to think about the powerful effect that words can have.
The Nazis used words, in the form of propaganda, to incite anti-Semitism in the German population, allowing them to spread their ideology and commit their crimes.
But words can also be used in protest against regimes, or to offer kindness in times of oppression, and it's important to remember the power of these words too.
Words also allow us to share our stories.
Hearing the words of Holocaust survivors reminds us that these things really did happen and that the victims and perpetrators were all humans, just like us.
Their words and their stories remind us that if we don’t learn lessons from history, we are just one step away from history repeating itself.
