How to prepare for the new term

Organise your desk and classroom layout

If the layout of the classroom wasn’t working for you last year, maybe it’s time to swap things around a little. Try to come up with a new layout that will suit everyone’s needs. Think about whether your desk is in a good position where you can see all your pupils and they can all see you.

Create a new seating plan

Your seating plan can have a real impact on students’ behaviour and learning, so it’s important to have a good think about where you want each student to sit and how they will affect those around them. You may want to consider printing your plan and making it part of your classroom display as this will help remind students where they are sitting as they ease into the first few weeks back. It can be good to revisit the seating plan later in the year and swap any students that aren’t taking to it so well.

Label classroom equipment and stock up on supplies

Do a stock check of your classroom equipment, workbooks and supplies and re-order what you need as there are always students asking to borrow things! Be sure to establish some rules about borrowing equipment so that students know when to give things back and how long they can keep things.

Decorate your classroom with posters

It’s a new term so that means a new classroom display! If like many other teachers you’re looking for some new classroom posters, then check out our resources page where we have a range of free resources for all subjects. A bright and colourful classroom really helps to establish a positive learning environment.

Create lesson plans

Now this is probably the task you are dreading the most but doing even a little bit of planning during the summer can massively reduce your stress come the first week back. Try to think of your goals for the first day and build onwards from there.

Familiarise yourself with the school rules and decide on your classroom policies

One good way to get back into ‘teacher mode’ is to remind yourself of the school rules and routine and create some of your own classroom rules around this. Think about what time you will do the register, how long to give students to pack away, when you will set homework tasks etc. Establishing a regular routine not only helps you to feel organised but it also helps your students to settle back into a structured day.

Get a good night’s sleep before returning to school!

Although we’ve recommended getting ahead on your planning, getting plenty of sleep the night before the first day back is equally important! You want to feel calm and refreshed when you return to school – not like you’ve woken up on the wrong side of the bed!
