Top Tips for Launching Your School Ski Trip Post-Covid

With the disappointment of missing out on the 2020/21 season and the positive news of a vaccine rollout in the near future, many of you are keen to start making plans for the 2021/22 season.

Getting all the key decision makers on board with your school ski trip plans is a hurdle that has always faced ski party-leaders but the ongoing pandemic has made this all the more challenging.

Here we share some of our top tips to help get key decision makers on board and to ensure your students don’t miss out on one of the highlights of their school experience.

Highlight the benefits of a school ski trip

When organising a school ski trip, one of the first things you need to demonstrate is the benefits of organising such a trip for your students. This is particularly important if you’re looking to organise a trip during term time.

School ski trips can often be seen as a bit of a ‘jolly’ but, in reality, they offer so much more than that.

Spending a week taking part in a fun outdoor sport will teach students many skills that will benefit them in their education and in later life including cognitive and character-building skills such as resilience, growth mindset and independence, as well as physical skills such as balance and core stability.

Outline the financial protection your tour operator offers

Now more than ever, choosing a financially secure and accredited tour operator is vitally important.

Booking with an ABTA and ATOL bonded tour operator, such as Halsbury Ski, offers you the financial peace of mind that your money is protected should the operator encounter financial difficulties before you’re due to travel or while you’re away on your trip.

For more information on our accreditations and bonding, you may like to download our handout to share with parents and senior leadership

To offer further support and peace of mind to our customers during the pandemic, we also launched our ‘Book with Confidence Covid Guarantee’ allowing you to cancel your trip and receive a full refund within 30 days of departure (please note that terms and conditions apply).

Finally, booking with a tour operator ensures that, should FCDO advise against travel at the time of your departure meaning your tour operator can no longer fulfil your booking, you will be entitled to a full refund under the Package Travel Regulations.

Explain the health and safety procedures and systems in place

Another very important consideration is the health and safety of both the students and staff.

As a founding member of the School Travel Forum, we have a detailed safety management system in place, which will assist you in putting together a comprehensive risk assessment.

The School Travel Forum has also provided new measures and guidance for accommodation, visit and coach providers, which all our suppliers are adhering to, ensuring their services are covid-secure.

Get your students excited about the trip

Getting enough interest from students is another key factor in getting your school ski trip off the ground.

Students have missed out on so much and so having an exciting trip with their friends to look forward to will be very appealing.

Social media is one of the best ways to engage with them, so set up an account on Instagram or Twitter, if you haven’t already, and share videos and photos of previous trips to show them all the fun a school ski trip has to offer.
