Team GB's Medal Haul at Sochi Sees Funding for Winter Sports Doubled

The Sochi Winter Olympics had us all hooked from beginning to end and we can’t wait for PyeongChang in 2018, not least because the success of Team GB has now prompted UK Sport to double its funding for winter sports over the next 4 years.

Team GB’s winter Olympians managed to exceed expectations, bringing home four medals. This equalled Britain’s previous best showing at a winter Olympics, when we brought home four medals from the inaugural event in Chamonix in 1924.

Lizzy Yarnold’s skeleton gold cemented Britain’s dominance in the sport; following on from Amy Williams’ gold in Vancouver four years previously. Lizzy’s victory has led to an increase of £3.1m in funding for her sport.

Jenny Jones secured Team GB their first medal on snow, when she won bronze in the snowboard slopestyle, leading UK Sport to pledge an additional £3.3m for ski and snowboard.

As for curling, the country went mad for this seemingly rather sedate sport. The intensity and the drama really drew in audiences and our boys and girls certainly did not disappoint. The men came home with silver, and the women with bronze.

British Paralympians also did exceptionally well, with their haul of 6 medals their best result for 30 years!

UK Sport will invest up to £31m in total on winter sports over the next 4 years, in the hope that the 2018 winter Olympics in PyeongChang will be another record-breaker for Team GB. It is an acknowledgement of the sporting talent that we have in this country and the realisation that this needs to be encouraged and nurtured.

Another fantastic by-product of our athletes’ success is the interest that it has generated in winter sports. Many who had no previous experience of winter sports were drawn in and it became a great focus for the whole of Britain. We hope that the lasting effect of this will be that more people take up such sports, so that the legacy of our Sochi 2014 athletes lives on.
