Passo Tonale Crowned Europe's Snowiest Resort for 2013-14 Season

Passo Tonale has long been a favourite amongst our groups, thanks to the high-altitude, glacier skiing and the reliable snow cover. However, this fantastic resort has now been crowned the snowiest resort in Europe for the 2013-14 season by weathertoski.co.uk.

In truth, the Italian Alps in general had a terrific season in terms of snowfall, and the best since the 1950s, particularly in central and eastern parts. In what was a notably warm season, Italian resorts generally fared well from the beginning, with the resorts of Cervinia and Monterosa offering the best conditions from November until Christmas.

With the approach of the festive season came several severe storms, with large areas of northern Italy, and Lombardy in particular, buried under a huge amount of snow! Whilst this did initially cause some problems, it also provided an excellent base, which would guarantee good conditions in these resorts for the remainder of the season, despite particularly warm and sunny conditions in March. The Southern Alps continued to witness further snowfall throughout January and well into February.

Almost without exception, the 2013-14 season saw snowfall well above average in all northern Italian resorts, especially those to the north-east. Cervinia recorded 8.3m just at resort level and an incredible 11.4m at its highest point. Passo Tonale, which would expect around 5m in an average year, received more than double this, with a huge 11.6m!
