Día de Andalucía

On Sunday, the people of Andalusia will celebrate the Día de Andalucía, marking the 1980 referendum that saw the region designated an autonomous community of Spain

In Spanish law, Andalusia is viewed as one of the constituent nationalities of the Spanish state, recognising the strong sense of identity that the local population holds.

Andalusia was once at the heart of al-Andalus, the Muslim territory in Iberia. Much of the Moorish influence remains in the region’s culture and architecture and the opportunity to discover this fascinating element of Spanish history make Andalusia a very attractive option for school Spanish trips.

On Día de Andalucía, people often decorate their balconies and the outside of their homes with green and white bunting, as well as the green and white flag of Andalusia. The day often starts with a traditional Andalusian breakfast and cultural events are often staged, including plays. The national anthem is also sung on this day, the words for which are as follows:

La bandera blanca y verde

La bandera blanca y verde

vuelve, tras siglos de guerra,

a decir paz y esperanza,

bajo el sol de nuestra tierra.

¡Andaluces, levantaos!

¡Pedid tierra y libertad!

¡Sea por Andalucía libre,

España y la Humanidad!

Los andaluces queremos

Volver a ser lo que fuimos

Hombres de luz, que a los hombres,

alma de hombres les dimos.

¡Andaluces, levantaos!

¡Pedid tierra y libertad!

íSea por Andalucía libre,

España y la Humanidad!
