School name: Ercall Wood Technology College
Destination: New York
Subject area: Cultural Experience
In October last year, a group from Ercall Wood Technology College embarked on an adventure to the Big Apple. Their teacher’s aim: to give her pupils the opportunity to travel further afield and to experience a bustling city, as well as visiting world-famous sites.
Why did they choose New York?
New York was chosen as the destination for this school trip because pupils had been asking about the possibility of a school trip to America for several years.
One of the school’s heads of year actually comes from upstate New York, and so it was decided that New York City would be the best destination, as it is the easiest part of the state to reach from the UK. Plus, of course, there’s plenty to do in NYC!
What did they get up to?
The Group Leader wanted the pupils to see all the main tourist attractions and world-famous sights, including all those they’d seen in TV and films, to ensure the pupils would have lifelong memories of New York.
So, they visited places such as the Empire State Building, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty and Ground Zero. They also saw a Broadway Show, took a walking tour and ate out in a number of the city’s restaurants.
What were the benefits of the trip for the pupils?
Several of the pupils had never flown or even been away from home, and so the trip allowed them to learn some important life skills, including how to behave in an airport and navigating customs.
They also had to take more responsibility – for their spending money and in terms of making sure they were up and ready for the day ahead.
The pupils shared rooms, so they had to get along with one another and be considerate of each other’s needs.
And, of course, pupils now have lifelong memories of New York City!
What will be the Group Leader’s lasting memories of this trip?
“The whole New York experience is amazing and offers pupils the chance to see the many things they would only normally see on TV and in films, giving pupils this opportunity is incredibly rewarding. Seeing pupil’s faces when they spot a famous sight for the first time is wonderful.”
Why did they choose Halsbury for this trip?
“We have used Halsbury for trips to Germany in the past and their quote was competitive. Other staff highly recommended them so I went with what we knew as a school, if it’s not broke…don’t fix it.”
How was the experience of working with Halsbury on this trip?
“Zoe and James were very helpful and answered my many, many questions. The trips were well planned and met my brief. I have really enjoyed working with both of them and hope to continue to do so in the future. Would I recommend Halsbury to my friends and colleagues? Yes, most definitely.”
