Beth's Top Picks for Your 2022 School Ski Trip

Beth Hall is one of our experienced Ski Specialists. Here, she tells us her top picks for 2022 school ski trips.

Resort 1 – Artesina

Beth's Top Picks for Your 2022 School Ski Trip

My first pick is the wonderful resort of Artesina, close to Prato Nevoso. It’s no secret that it’s my favourite place to be – a real home from home!

Many of my school groups send me great feedback after a school ski trip here, describing it as ‘the best school trip yet’ and ‘simply perfect’. But why do school groups love it so much? Well, Artesina is a truly versatile resort and perfect for all levels of skiers.

The beginners’ slopes are easily accessed, just metres from the ski school meeting point. And there’s really good progression on to wide, open blue runs.

It’s fantastic for the more experienced skiers too, with some really demanding runs. Recently, Artesina has been used as a training venue for the Italian Ladies World Cup skiers.

The Turra, at the top of the resort, is one of the most picturesque spots in the Piedmont region. From here you can see the arc of the Alps, including the famous ‘Paramount Films peak’ and the valley below. The Turra often boasts great conditions and is accessible to all levels of skiers.

Added to this, the ski school is fantastic. The instructors are so experienced, calm and kind, and we always see every ability of skiers progress well with their skiing during the week.

Artesina forms part of the Mondole ski area and is linked to the neighbouring resorts of Prato Nevoso and Frabosa Soprano, giving you access to 130km of piste. And the link from Artesina has now been made easier thanks to the new Porsche-designed gondola from Prato Nevoso and the new chairlift from the Artesina side.

Where should you stay?

Hotel Marguareis

The food is fantastic and nothing is too much trouble for the hotel staff. Every day you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast including bread, ham, cheese, yoghurt, cereal, fruit and sweet breads or cake. A two-course hot lunch and three-course evening meal are also taken at the hotel restaurant. There’s also an in-house pizzeria, so you can be certain your pupils aren’t going to go hungry!

The Marguareis

I can wholeheartedly say that you will truly be looked after at the Marguareis

Resort 2 – Sansicario

My second resort recommendation for 2022 is Sansicario. The beauty of Sansicario is that you’re in the very heart of the Milky Way (Via Lattea) ski area, which is renowned for its expansive skiing network – there’s a massive 400km of piste available to you on the lift pass!

One of the big plus points with this resort is the flexibility of the ski school there for Easter skiing. With 5 hours of tuition every day, the ski school offers a ski safari to all of the other Milky Way resorts. At Easter, the ski school are happy to travel with your group by coach to each of the other resorts in the area, so valuable lesson time isn’t lost on the lifts.

This means that your students will actually have the opportunity to make the most of this expansive area, something which isn’t usually possible with comparably large ski areas (at least, certainly not during lesson times). Your group will be able to ski Sauze d’Oulx, Montgenevre, Claviere, and the World Cup and Olympic resort of Sestriere, as well as Sansicario.

Where should you stay?

The Olympic Centre

There are fantastic views from the café with lots of big windows overlooking the beautiful surrounding area and there is a beginners’ ski area at the hotel with a dedicated magic carpet too.

The accommodation itself is a fantastic, purpose-built group centre. The food is exceptional and served buffet-style, so you can be sure that your pupils will have plenty of choice and will be well fed. There is unlimited water, a starter buffet, a salad buffet, a choice of two pasta dishes and two main courses, as well as dessert or fruit to finish.

There is also an in-house animations team, who run discos and karaokes for guests. And there’s also a new mini market in the centre, where the pupils can buy any extra provisions they want.

The ski fit is also in house, so any problems with the equipment can be sorted quickly. And there’s space in the hotel for courts, nets and goals, so you can even play 5-a-side or basketball. And there’s a new snow tubing area and bumboarding is also available right outside the hotel.

Resort 3 – Claviere

Claviere is part of the Milky Way ski area and is on the Italian side of the Franco-Italian border. Claviere is a lovely village, and another of my personal favourites.

The hotel is just a short walk from the ski school meeting point. And the progression here is fantastic – the nursery slopes run alongside the ski school and then you can take one of the chairlifts up into the main ski area, where there are some lovely runs to bring you back down to the village. The tree-lined runs really are very picturesque!

Claviere is one of Italy’s oldest resorts and is home to the very first ski school in Italy. Many of the instructors have raced at a high level, speak very good English and are very patient.

The resort itself is very relaxed and everyone is very friendly and hospitable – they’ll make you feel very welcome indeed.

The mountain restaurant La Coche is probably the best in Italy, in my opinion. For a really special evening, you can take a skidoo and trailer ride to the restaurant for a meal, or just a crepe and hot chocolate.

And there are a number of other evening activities available here, including a traditional pizza night and karaoke.

Where should we stay?

Hotel Miramonti

They offer lovely home cooked food in the hotel’s good sized restaurant. There’s also a lounge area where you can sit and meet, or you can use it for evening activities.
