Better known by its German name, Theresienstadt, the eighteenth century fortress near this small Czech town was chosen by the Nazis, in 1941 to house political prisoners. Meanwhile, a 'model ghetto' was established in the town itself. Around 25,000 Jews died of disease or starvation here, and the bodies or ashes of another 10,000 political prisoners rest in the National Cemetery. Thousands more died in other camps to which they were later deported.
