Set behind the beautiful Table Mountain, Newlands is arguably the most beautiful ground on the world stage, with a backdrop fitting a fine cricket stadium. The ground is dominated by the sweeping and distinct architecture that has lifted the capacity to an impressive 25,000. Interestingly, the wicket is the only one in South Africa that can be said to favour and promote spin bowling and the area has produced most of South Africa's spin bowlers, most recently Paul Adams.
However the main products of this beautiful city have been the Kirsten family, with Peter, Paul and Gary all residing in Cape Town.
The ground has proved to be a good one for the home team, (during modern times) who seem to play their cricket with a higher intensity, like a travelling side often does at Lord's. Whether it is the tradition and surroundings that motivate the players or the impressive local crowds that are drawn to Newlands, the ground is certainly South Africa's favourite and this was shown when it was chosen as the venue for the opening ceremony and match of the 2003 World Cup. Visit the President's Suite; the exclusive South Club and the control rooms, including the scorers' and third umpire's booth. Then take a walk around this beautiful ground.
