With visits less than one hour away from Calais, the Opal Coast region is the perfect destination for younger groups. Take your pupils to a chocolate factory, a local bakery, the Bagatelle theme park, Nausicaa National Sea Centre, a trip to the seaside or experience the atmosphere at one of the local markets.

Make it a one day school trip, or stay for a couple of days to really give your pupils the opportunity to explore and practise their French.

The Nausicaa Sea-World museum seeks to educate children about the marine environment, man's impact upon it and why it is important that marine life should be protected. Tropical lagoons, sea lion enclosures, shark tanks and affectionate stingrays are all very popular with children and school groups.

Watch how speciality pancakes are made from the basic ingredients and help to produce them. Finish your visit by enjoying your own pancake with jam or chocolate sauce accompanied by an orange juice! You will also have the opportunity to watch the traditional french "Patissiers" work the marzipan... you may even leave with a marzipan souvenir for your school!

This traditional family-owned bakery is well worth a visit. You will have the chance to watch a baker at work in the original part of the bakery and some self-practice too. To conclude your visit, you will be able to sample fresh baguettes and croissants.

Your visit to this traditional sweet factory will be both fun and educational. Patrick and Kerry welcome school groups of all ages to learn how sweets are made from start to finish. Before you return home, make sure you stop at P&J Calais, to stock up on handmade Belgian chocolates! Chocolate workshops and demonstrations are also available.

FUAJ Boulogne

Situated halfway between the port and the old town, the Auberge Annette Allan-Lantz is in an ideal location for visiting Boulogne and the Pas-de-Calais. Run by very friendly staff, this centre is enjoyed by school groups every year.

Pupils will be in multi-bedded en-suite bedrooms and staff in twins (a supplementary charge applies for single staff rooms).

Breakfast is served at the hostel every day, and both evening meals and packed lunches are available on request.

It offers WiFi, a pool, table tennis table, a garden and a TV area. An activity room can be reserved for group activities.

The Hippotel is set within tranquil woodlands, just half a mile from the centre of Le Touquet.

The accommodation has rooms for up to 6 people, each with a bath or shower and separate WC. All guestrooms have a TV. Staff single rooms are available at a supplement.

In terms of communal areas, there is a games room and sauna, a bar with a terrace and games area, and two conference rooms seating up to 30 people. The hotel also has its own restaurant, offering fantastic panoramic views over both the park and the regional equestrian centre.

Centre Europeen de Sejour

Centre Europeen de Sejour is a light and modern Youth Hostel in Calais. It offers a total of 162 beds spread between 84 rooms.

Pupils are normally in twin or triple rooms with one shared bathroom between every 2 rooms. Staff will be accommodated in twin bedded rooms, but single rooms are available at a supplement.

Other facilities include a large self-service restaurant, two meeting rooms which can be used for group activities, TV, video and a games room with billiards and table football.
