World Environment Day 2018

On 5th June people around the world will mark World Environment Day. Held every year, World Environment Day is a UN initiative designed to increase global awareness of issues affecting our environment.

Each year has its own theme and this year the theme is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, in a bid to eradicate pollution caused by single-use plastic.

Here in the UK, the effects of plastic on the health of our oceans was brought to the forefront of public consciousness by Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II.

There does certainly seem to be a building movement to put pressure on large companies, and supermarkets in particular, to move away from using single-use plastic. But with 8 million tonnes of plastic ending up in the oceans every year, and 50% of that being single-use or disposable, we need to do more.

Here at Halsbury, we are conscious of our use of plastic and have installed recycling bins around our office, to ensure that anything that can be recycled is.

We’ve also started to think about our use of water, after concerns were raised again recently over water scarcity around the world

We’ve put posters up around our office to encourage the Halsbury family to conserve as much water as possible.

We’ve also created this FREE poster for your classroom, to help your students understand how they too can help.

And we’ve put together this infographic to help your students understand what water scarcity is.

One way to help your students to better appreciate and understand the world around them is to take them on a school trip. Our geography school trips in particular can include the opportunity to consider human effects on the environment.
