Teacher Familiarisation Tour to Montpellier

On 5th-8th May 2012 Halsbury Travel and the LSF French Language school organised a familiarisation tour to Montpellier for 10 teachers of Modern Foreign Languages from the UK.

Despite an hour delay on the outbound flight and the promise of showers during our stay, 10 Modern Foreign Languages teachers and 2 members of Halsbury staff arrived in good spirits for a 4 day tour of Montpellier over the may Bank Holiday weekend. All the teachers had specified an interest in bringing a group of students from their school to Montpellier to improve their French and this provided an excellent opportunity to see for themselves why everyone simply falls in love with the city.

After a swift transfer to the hotel and a visit to the Olympic swimming pool we boarded a tram for the “Odysseum”, home to a multiplex cinema, ten pin bowling, indoor go karting, ice skating, Aquarium, Planetarium and shopping centre – every teenager’s paradise! An afternoon excursion spent here after a week of French lessons and cultural activities is an ideal choice for letting off a bit of steam.

The next day the weather remained dry and actually rather sunny as the morning was spent exploring a local French farmers market before taking the tram and shuttle bus to the beach. After lunch at a beach side restaurant most stayed on to enjoy the sunshine before returning to the city for dinner at the riverside whilst the rest of France waited to see who was going to be their next President.

On Monday a joint presentation was held by Halsbury and LSF on the subjects of French lessons, host families and the importance of using an ABTA bonded tour operator before taking a tour of the language school, Summer school for juniors (the only one in Montpellier) and the Residence. Information was provided on tours for school groups, the very popular AS and A Level Revision course and host family selection policies.

Lunch was a different affair with teachers having to prepare it themselves all under the close supervision of Valerie at Atelier du Valerie, one of Montpellier’s top French cookery schools. This was followed by a guided tour of Montpellier provided by the tourist office, providing the group with access to places not normally accessible to tourists such as climbing to the top of Montpellier’s own Arc de Triomphe and into a traditional Jewish Mitkve. A final serving of Entrecote and Café Gourmaud was enjoyed that evening before returning to London Luton early the following morning.

Thank you to the teachers from Sheffield High, Loughborough Grammar, Light Hall, Suffolk One, Comberton Village, Downside, Talbot Heath, City and Islington and Carisbrooke School for taking part, to LSF Montpellier for hosting us all and to the BBC for completely being wrong with the weather forecast. We had 4 days of beautiful sunshine.
