School trips to Ypres, Belgium

Many groups who visit the World War I battlefields will at least pass through Ypres. This small Belgian town occupied an important strategic position, as it stood in the way of the German’s plans to sweep into France from the north, as part of the Schlieffen Plan. Not to be missed on a school trip to Ypres is the opportunity to take part in the moving Last Post Ceremony, which takes place every evening at the town’s famous Menin Gate.
