The aim of the trip is to visit key locations from the novel and to engage your students in lively discussion of Faulks' narrative technique. We can also offer 2 day tours staying overnight in Albert with a chance to visit the 1916 Somme Museum. Both tours will focus on sites visited and described by Sebastian Faulks in the telling of the story.

Guided Tour of "Old Amiens"
After a brief introduction in front of the cathedral, your guide will show you the Notre-Dame district and will take you into the lower part of town. You will finish your tour in the upper part of town, in the heart of the city centre’s shopping streets.
This is the perfect start to your trip as your French students will discover the city’s monuments and history.
Thiepval Memorial to the Missing
The slaughter on the Somme wiped out a generation, and continues to cast a shadow on Britain’s popular consciousness. This colossal brick structure records the names of 72,000 British soldiers whose bodies were never found. Here students can read the Wilfred Owen poem "Anthem for a doomed youth".
Lochnagar Crater
On the morning of the first day of the battle of the Somme, Welsh miners blew a huge mine under the German trenches here. The crater it left, an immense, permanent scar on the landscape, is still clearly visible today.
