Empire State Building
Reaching more than a quarter of a mile into the Manhattan sky, the Empire State Building was the world's tallest building from its completion in 1931 until 1970. The view from the observatory on the eighty-sixth floor is one of the finest urban panoramas anywhere in the world.
Guggenheim New York
This is the original Guggenheim, conceived by Solomon Guggenheim in 1937 as an exhibition space for twentieth-century art. Frank Lloyd Wright’s striking curved snail-shell of a building is home to temporary exhibitions and works from the Guggenheim’s rotating permanent collection, including pieces by Picasso, Cézanne, Gauguin and Kandinsky.
MOMA
From a modest collection of eight prints and a drawing in 1929, MoMA has grown to be one of the world’s leading collections of contemporary art. It interprets the function of an art gallery broadly, and its collection includes photographs, film and design objects as well as more traditional media.Closed on Tuesdays.
Statue of Liberty
No trip to New York would be complete without a visit to the Statue of Liberty; the city’s iconic symbol. A choice of tours is available: the observatory tour will take you to the top of the pedestal, at the base of Liberty herself and give you the chance to look up into the statue.Free of charge but only accessible by ferry. (Please note access to the Crown is subject to weather conditions)
Staten Island Ferry
The Staten Island Ferry exists for the parochial purpose of getting commuters to and from Manhattan, but outside rush hour it’s also a fantastic way of taking a closer look at the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan waterfront.
Ellis Island
Between 1892 and 1954, twelve million immigrants first set foot on American soil at the reception centre at Ellis Island. Today, some 40% of Americans can trace at least one ancestor who passed through it. A fascinating piece of social history, a visit to the museum is essential to understanding this nation of immigrants.
United Nations
New York has been home to the UN since the organisation's inception at the end of World War II. A guided tour of the organisation's headquarters takes in some of the UN's most important organs, including the General Assembly and the Security Council. A unique opportunity to catch a glimpse inside the UN.
