School Leisure & Tourism trip to Istanbul
Istanbul is surrounded on the north and the south by two seas, the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara, respectively. The western half of the city lies in Europe while the eastern half is situated in Asia; in between the two halves flows the Bosphorus Strait. Istanbul represents the Asian city nearest Europe and the European city closest to Asia. Its history tracks from Byzantium to its place at the head of the Ottoman Empire in a context that spans from the ancient ruins of Troy through the breathtaking architecture of Istanbul to the brooding beaches of Gallipoli.

The Hippodrome, which was once the centre of Byzantine Constantinople, is adjacent to the Blue Mosque. The Hippodrome was once a huge stadium seating over 100,000 who gathered for chariot races and political rallies. Today it is a large park, and a road covers the ancient chariot course. The two large obelisks and one other small one are all that remain of the Hippodrome.
Underground Cistern
This cistern is thought to have been built after the Nika revolt in 532 AD. It was known as the Basilica Cistern during the Roman period, as there was a Stoa Basilica above the pre-existing one at the time. After the conquest of the city by the Ottoman Turks, it was forgotten. Re-discovered in 1545, it was used to water the gardens of Topkapi Palace. The Underground Cistern today is an atmospheri...
