Fragments of the Ghetto Wall

Fragments of the Ghetto Wall
Between the houses at No.55 Sienna Street and at No.62 Złota Street, there are still fragments of the Ghetto Wall. It was between November 15th, 1940, and November 20th, 1941 that this wall constituted the border of the Jewish Ghetto. The Wall was 3 metres high and covered in barbed wires. Another fragment of the Wall remains in Waliców Street.

The monument was unveiled in the ruins of the Ghetto on April 19th, 1948, the day of the fifth anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. On the west side, there is a sculpture called ”the Struggle”, symbolizing fighting Ghetto Uprisers. A bas-relief, “the Road towards Extermination”, is situated on the east. The Museum is the center of knowledge on the Warsaw Uprising. It was conceived in order to materialize the atmosphere of Uprising days and everyday life of civilians. There are lots of interesting exhibitions (photographs, documents, newspapers, uniforms and weapons) for visitors to enjoy on all that relates to the Warsaw Uprising.

Museum of the Prison Pawiak
The Pawiak Prison Museum is a branch of the Museum of Independence. During the German occupation 1939-1945, this was a Gestapo prison. Pawiak was a place where members of the Polish resistance suffered appalling tortures. Over one hundred thousand Polish citizens: Christians and Jews, were imprisoned in the Pawiak during the World War II, and over thirty thousand lost their lives.

Old Town Market Square

Old Town Market Square
Restored to their original glory following destruction during World War II. The Old Town (Stare Miasto) and Market Square (Rynek) are today delightful places to spend time, with cobblestone streets, cafés and restaurants. The buildings of today come from 1948 - 1953.
