The Marienfelde Refugee Centre Memorial is a museum documenting flight and emigration during Germany’s post-war division (1949-1990).

Between 1949 and 1990, roughly four million people left East Germany (GDR) for West Germany (FRG). 1,350,000 of these individuals passed through the Marienfelde Refugee Centre. Established in 1953 in the Berlin district of Marienfelde, individuals fleeing East Germany were housed and cared for at the Centre. Here the refugees also underwent the process required to obtain a residence permit for West Germany and West Berlin.

Located on the authentic site of this history, today’s exhibition recalls the reasons, course and consequences of this inner-German movement of peoples. Why did some individuals decide to leave East Germany? How did they cross the border? How were they received in the “Golden West”?

The centre offer a diverse program to school and youth groups. This program extends from an escorted tour of the permanent exhibition to activity-oriented project work lasting several hours. (see website for further details)
