It stands on an imposing site overlooking the river and the broad circle of ramparts, intersected with towers, affords outstanding panoramic views. Archaeological digs ...

The Roman collection features pieces from the Milreu Ruins: the Ocean mosaic, two tombstones with inscriptions referring to Ossonoba and busts of emperors Agripina, Hadrian and Galien. Church of our Lady (Nossa Senhora do Carmo) and Bones Chapel
The baroque fronted church still dominates the Largo do Carmo square, despite its now modern building surround of banks particularly. The architecture is ordered, almost perfectly symetrical with twin bell towers. The unique Portuguese baroque style of Do Carmo is called talha dourada. The outside facade wasn't actually finished until after the earthquake. Inside is even more ornate, with Brazilia...

Loule Market
Loule bursts into life particularly on Saturday mornings when it holds its huge open air market. Loule's indoor market is open every day offering a choice of food and craft stalls. There's plenty of great specialist shops here too, particularly for shoes, but also for crafts, leather goods and lace. There's a history of handicrafts in Loule, and indeed there's a steep alley called Calcada dos Sapa...
Castle Ruins and Archeological Museum of Loule
Both Romans and Moors settled in Loule, and this museum has a fine selection of Roman and Bronze Age artefacts (lookout for the Moorish floor underneath a glass panel) as well as prehistoric tools and pottery fragments. The tourist information centre is connected to the Castle museum. Entrance to the Archeological Museum includes a tour of the remains of the castle walls.
Church of the Holy Mary of Castelo (Santa Maria do Castelo)
Just nearby the castle, it dates from the 13th century, albeit with extensive reworking after the 1755 earthquake. Inside you can view the tombs of Dom Paio Peres Correla and 7 Christian knights of the crusading Order of St James. These knights were murdered by the moors, a key instigator for the Christian counterattack and subsequent retaking of Tavira.
Castle of Tavira
Although originally Moorish, the castle remains you see today in Tavira date mostly from the 17th century rebuild (some of the walls though date from the reign of King Dinis (1261-1325). Fine views across Tavira and the River Gilao are to be had from the castle walls. A pretty garden sits within it.
Ruins of Milreu
The plan of the ruins shows the characteristic form of a Roman villa with courtyard surrounded by a gallery of columns (peristyle). There were several rooms built around this central area, some of them still with beautiful mosaics, which represent geometric and fish motives. At the west of the peristyle one finds a large Roman bath divided in several compartments as "apoditerium" (changing-room) r...
