Company History

Halsbury Travel was established in 1986 by Keith Sharkey, a former language teacher who passionately believes in the value of educational travel. Having himself benefited from regular trips to France throughout his school years, Keith went on to lead various trips abroad during his time as a teacher. Having witnessed firsthand just how inspiring a school tour can be for students, Keith created Halsbury Travel to help more and more students explore the world. 

The Halsbury Family

Halsbury Travel is a family-run business with two generations now working in the company. Keith met his wife Sue, a former geography and sociology teacher on a school field in St. Albans and they married three years later. Having been involved with Halsbury since its creation, Sue continued to teach in secondary schools, organising numerous school field and ski trips until 1998 when she joined Halsbury full-time. Sue now works within the finance department day-to-day and also helps to manage the company with Keith and the rest of the senior staff.  

Sue and Keith have two children, a son and a daughter named Stuart and Katie, who also both work within the company. Stuart has worked at Halsbury from the age of 17 and is now Manger of the Transport Department while Katie assumed the role of Marketing Manager in 2011 after completing her degree in marketing.

Halsbury Travel has grown considerably over the years and now employs over 60 full-time personnel. We have retained our family atmosphere though and several of our staff members have been with us since the very early days! We believe that this tight-knit office atmosphere is one of the reasons why we have so much repeat custom, as our schools benefit from a professional service which is also personal and friendly.

Here at Halsbury, we truly believe that being founded and managed by former teachers allows us to fully understand and prioritise the needs of our customers. Each of our trip advisers is a specialist in their subject area, providing expert insight into the educational value of every destination, tour and activity. Many of them have worked within the school travel industry for more than 10 years, and several have been with Halsbury since the very beginning.
