Tips for cheaper school day trip abroad - from £26

Want to organise a school trip abroad to enthuse your students but worried about a lack of interest or funds? In these difficult economic times value for money is even more important so here is some advice on how to book a day trip abroad without breaking the bank.

Day trips

The obvious starting point is a day trip abroad rather than a long tour. Especially for schools in the south east region. Choose between France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany.

Time of year

Ferry crossings run on a low and high season and if you can arrange your trip any time between September and March then you will be in low season.

Then it is all about day of the week.

On Mondays and Tuesdays the crossing is 1 pound per person less. If you can avoid Fridays (when there is a £1 supplement) then this will keep costs down.

Visits and attractions

Once you are in France then a visit to a French market or a town trail of Boulogne's old town will not cost you a penny. The sweet factory and chocolaterie are excellent visits especially for your year 7 and 8s and will cost less than 3 euros each. Allow some time for shopping at Cite Europe on the way back to the port and you have organised a day abroad for students to practice their French without spending a fortune.
In Germany the beautiful Christmas Markets in Aachen and Cologne will occupy your students for the majority of the time. And for History students a trip to Ypres visiting In Flanders Fields Museum, the Menin Gate, Tyne Cot Cemetary, Essex Farm and Paschendale will only cost them an extra euro.
