Simile and metaphor recognition exercise. (assuming they know what they are). Divide a page in exercise book into two columns and title them simile and metaphor (check the spelling), then read out examples and pupils to write them in the appropriate column. See resource sheet 1.
Introduce the idea of a school visit/trip.
Discuss the associations of a school visit, possibly abroad, does this provoke any ideas, did parents/relatives have any input when trip was first mentioned, had they been on school trips – memories etc, or had they never been away?
What did peers think/say, did they have any input etc.
Collate these on whiteboard. Give pupils time to sort these ideas into any grouping they feel is appropriate, give the groups a name.
Give pupils a picture from the trip. Ask them to list the things they see. They then need to describe several of the items in detail, perhaps incorporating a simile or metaphor where possible.
Looking at the picture, go through the five senses. Ask pupils to imagine that they are in the picture. (a) Any clues about what has happened, (b) what could happen or (c) what is happening? After individual reflection on each of these things allow time for discussion in pairs and whole class feedback.
Write a paragraph on a, b and c using the senses and incorporating a simile or metaphor in each.
Pupils write their own extended description of a holiday or trip focussing on detail and using the five senses and some simile and metaphor –but be sparing, not too many.
Ask class to share any sentences they have written containing a sense, simile or metaphor and share comments on these sentences.

3. He is a greyhound on the running track.
4. There was a blanket of snow on the ground.
5. You have a heart of stone.
6. His eyes were as blue as the sky in summer.
7. She’s as daft as a brush!
8. He was as tall as a house.
9. You have broken my heart.
10. He is as strong as a horse.
11. Your hair is as soft as silk.
12. The ball flew like a rocket.
13. My love is like a red, red rose.
14. It is raining cats and dogs.
15. My bedroom is a tip!
